The Quick Guide to Essential Oils Safety

Although Essential Oils have several benefits like argan oil for skin works rather great, one must never forget about their potency level and should always use them carefully and wisely.

So, make sure that the next time you are about to use an essential oil topically, you don’t forget to follow the following mentioned safety precautions.

Trust me, ignoring these safety considerations could really be harmful to your skin!

Diluting the Essential Oils

A lot of essential oils are actually known as hot oils because when applied directly to your body, they can cause a physical burn at the applied area. This is why it is important that you dilute such essential hot oils with carrier oils to neutralize its burning effect.

Diluting the Essential Oils

A few popular hot oils which require dilution are cinnamon oil, oregano oil, thyme oil, and so on. These oils are so hot that for every 1 drop of the essential oil, you need to mix 2 drops of carrier oil to dilute them effectively.

Another popular reason why you should dilute the essential oil is that when you have to apply it on a larger area, a carrier oil will be able to help you out in spreading the oil quickly and efficiently. In such situations, it is highly advised to use a carrier oil and not take a larger amount of essential oil because many essential oils can cause a burning sensation if used in excess. So, dilute it before you use it.

Topical Use with Children

Since children’s skin is more fragile, it is important that you always dilute the essential oil before using it on your child. If your child is aged between 6 months to 6 years, then you need to mix 2 drops of carrier oil with 1 drop of essential oil and if your child is older than 6 years, then you need to mix 1 drop of carrier oil with 1 drop of essential oil.

You also need to make a note of the essential oils that are not safe to be used with children so that you can avoid them. Also, make a note that whenever you apply the essential oil mixture to your child, you always apply it to the feet or the chest and then cover the applied area so that your child doesn’t get the oil on his hand and rubs his eyes with it.

Photosensitivity

A lot of essential oils like lime, lemon, ginger, etc. are sensitive to light and so, one should never go out in the daytime when applying these oils. Make sure you apply these oils during the nighttime or you cover your skin from the light when applied during the daytime.

Photosensitivity

You can wear a hat to cover your face or you can wear socks if you have applied the essential oils to your feet. The important thing is to cover the area on which you have applied the photosensitive essential oils. If you forget to do this, then you would feel a burning sensation when the oil gets exposed to light.
